Flames News · Boys Win, Girls Fall Short Against Shady Side Academy Swimmers

It was a thrilling meet last week against Shady Side Academy.

The Boys and Girls Swim team knew going into last night’s meet against section rival Shady Side Academy that they were in for a tough battle. Ready to compete on Senior Night, the teams combined to set 3 new team records and posted 22 individual and relay WPIAL qualifying times which is a team meet record.

The Boy’s team, looking to extend their 3-year section undefeated streak, showed their dominance by defeating Shady Side by a score of 115-57. The boys set the tone by sweeping the relay events and posting team records in the 200 Medley Relay and 200 Freestyle Relay. Leading the way in the relays were Seniors Zech Boyce and Nick Madey along with Junior Aidan Sommers, Sophomore Luke Tomczak and Freshman Cooper Groll. Individual event victories were earned by Boyce in the 200 Freestyle, Madey in the 100 Butterfly and 100 Breaststroke, Sommers in the 100 Backstroke, Tomzcak in the 200 Individual Medley, Groll in the 50 Freestyle and Junior Wylie Bozada in the 500 Freestyle. In addition, several swimmers contributed to the win and posted new WPIAL Qualifying times including Junior Mason Herzig and Freshman Clark Bernauer in the 400 Freestyle Relay, Sophomore Luke Wagner in the 50 and 100 Freestyle and Freshman Grahm Herzig in the 100 Backstroke and 200 Individual Medley.

The Girls Team competed hard against the defending WPIAL AA Champion Shady Side Girls team but came up just 7 points short with a score of 81-88. Strong performances in individual event victories by Senior Ava Groll in the 50 Freestyle, Junior Karen Siddoway in the 100 Freestyle and 200 Individual Medley, Junior Brianna Nowka in the 500 Freestyle, Freshman Carly Spahr 100 Backstroke. Siddoway broke her own team record in the 200 Individual Medley. New WPIAL Qualifying times were also posted by Sophomore Angie Patarini in the 100 Butterfly and Senior Katherine McFarland, Sophomore Kaylee Madey and Freshman Isabella Salerno and Danica Raich in the 400 Freestyle Relay.

Next week the teams host Obama Academy on Tuesday and will wrap-up their section schedule at Deer Lakes on Thursday.
