Flames News · Swimmers Dive into New Season with High Expectations

On Tuesday night, the boys and girls swim teams began their season with a home scrimmage against Blackhawk High School. Both teams used a combination of experienced PIAA and WPIAL qualifying swimmers and talented newcomers to post victories over the visiting Cougars.

The Boys Team is looking to win their third Section Championship in a row and improve on their 4th Place WPIAL showing last year. In the scrimmage against Blackhawk, the team looked to be in mid-season form posting a 98-59 victory. The highlight of the meet was the 200 Freestyle Relay where the team of Senior Zech Boyce, Junior Aidan Sommers, Sophomore Luke Tomczak and Freshman Cooper Groll set a new team record. Boyce, Sommers and Groll also teamed with Senior Nick Madey to win the 200 Medley Relay and the 400 Freestyle Relay. The team also swept the individual events with wins by Boyce in the 100 Freestyle, Madey in the 200 IM and 500 Freestyle, Sommers in the 50 Freestyle and 100 Backstroke, Tomczak in the 100 Breaststroke and 200 Freestyle and Groll in the 100 Freestyle. Also contributing to the team victory with 2nd place finishes were Senior Richard Danylo 100 Breaststroke, Junior Wylie Bozada 500 Freestyle and Mason Herzig 100 Freestyle, Sophomore Luke Wagner 100 Backstroke, and Freshman Clark Bernauer 200 Freestyle and Graham Herzig 200 IM and 100 Butterfly.

This season the Girls Team will be led by their returning PIAA and WPIAL qualifiers that include Senior Ava Groll, Juniors Karen Siddoway, Brianna Nowka and Chloe Cropper and Sophomore Angelina Patterini. The team will also be counting on several newcomers including Sophomore Isabella Salerno, Freshman Danica Raich and Carly Spahr who all made important contributions to the team’s 101-67 victory over Blackhawk. Siddoway, one of the top swimmers in the state, showed that she was ready for the season by winning the 200 IM and 100 Breaststroke where she broke her own team record. Siddoway also factored into the relays by teaming with Groll, Raich and Salerno to win the 200 Medley Relay .and with Salerno, Patarini and Spahr to win the 400 Freestyle Relay. The team also won the 200 Freestyle Relay with the team of Groll, Patarini, Nowka and Spahr. Wins in the individual events were also earned by Patarini in the 100 Butterfly and Salerno in the 50 Freestyle. Earning 2nd place finishes were Groll 100 Butterfly and 100 Backstroke, Salerno 100 Freestyle, Raich 100 Breaststroke and Spahr 200 and 500 Freestyle.

The swimmers will next be in action on Thursday, December 7th at 6:00 PM in a scrimmage meet at Quaker Valley.
